Italian tourist was arrested for refusing to pay for dinner
Residents of Formentera Island in Spain are not tired of discussing this incident from last week. A cunning 46-year-old Italian traveler will probably get a serious sentence for trying not to pay for an expensive dinner …
He was immediately noticed, which is understandable – a huge, fat, loud and not too polite tourist came into the restaurant “Es Molí de Sal”. He demanded a table on the veranda, as close to the sea as possible, overlooking Ibiza. The man emphasized several times that he is from Italy and loves a good meal, for which he came. The waiters were delighted in anticipation of a large order and a generous tip, but then an impromptu show of one actor began.
First, the Italian gobbled up a large plate of pasta with lobsters, then immediately demanded a whole baking sheet of fried seafood. By the end of the first hour they brought him oysters, by the beginning of the third – the fourth bottle of wine. The tourist did not give the menu and ordered everything, and ordered, methodically and with apparent pleasure, absorbing a second portion of pasta while another pan of fish was fried. And he ate it all alone, the restaurant staff noted in a delightedly offended tone. A few kilograms of expensive products of the highest quality, not including alcohol.
When the other guests were tired of staring at the glutton, he finally asked for an account. But only for what to tell the waiters in person that he does not intend to pay. But because! There is no money, but you hold on, and I will go for a walk. Or are you risking a scandal, calling the police to a restaurant and bandaging a foreign guest in front of a picky public? The waiters looked at each other and answered “Yes!”.
“Do you know what he got pierced on?” Argues Juan Jern, owner of Es Molí de Sal. The pest tourist drank and ate a little more than 400 euros. According to Spanish law, this is a threshold value that separates light crimes from serious ones. And if the Italian were less arrogant and thought better, he would have easily avoided the problems by ordering one less oyster. Instead, the judge, concurrently the owner of the island’s best restaurant converted from an old mill, demonstratively arrested him for a day and sent him to Ibiza “for provocations against Formentera restaurateurs”.

“He thought we were going to let him go, to avoid a scandal, but he was wrong.” Yes, the arrival of the Civil Guard patrol somewhat alarmed the wealthy yacht owners who dined at the restaurant. And the event definitely caused a resonance, but not at all the scandal with which the Italian blackmailed the waiters. The scandal happened after, when it turned out that the well-fed physiognomy was well remembered in neighboring resorts, where this tourist, following the same scheme, deceived several more catering establishments.
Given the number of individual crimes, the amount of 416 euros is no longer relevant, the charge has been reclassified as “aggravated fraud”. And an amateur can eat for him from 3 to 6 years old. Where it will surely be with great longing to remember how once it was overeating for free delicacies and believed in its resourcefulness and invulnerability.
