Old tourist centers pray to drive tourists away
UNESCO is preparing to add Venice to the list of disappearing objects if the tourist flow into the city does not decrease to reasonable limits …
Not only the historical and cultural center, but the whole village itself can disappear. Since the heyday of mass tourism in the 50s. of the last century, the population of the city of canals decreased fourfold, and now less than 50 thousand people live here directly. They physically do not have time to repair, maintain and develop Venice, while the city does not have so much money to attract labor migrants for these purposes.
As the Venetian old-timers recall, before they had a legal rest period between the tourist seasons. Time to clean the city, repair gondolas, restore sights and competently spend what you earned. Now tourists flow through Venice all year round, take millions of selfies, buy two souvenirs and a bottle of wine, and leave the next morning. No one can earn, everyone suffers from an overabundance of people, infrastructure is on the verge of collapse, and instead of hospitality, anger is accumulating in the hearts. Especially when the next cruise ship misses the pier, sowing panic and destruction, as it was last month.
Residents of Rome, Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris and Santorini are completely in solidarity with the Venetians, and how disappointed they were in Dubrovnik that they allowed to use the old streets of the city for the filming of Game of Thrones! If we ignore emotions, the whole problem is that the former global tourism model has become so obsolete that instead of taking profit, it has begun to cause losses. It is based on the simple rule “The more tourists come, the better”, but assessing the situation only by economic indicators leads to disaster. Social, environmental, cultural – choose to your taste.
According to the UN, 1.4 billion tourists travel the planet every year. And they absolutely do not value what they receive, and therefore they do not want to bear any responsibility. If a middle-class man can easily afford to fly with a low-cost airline over a whole continent for $ 20-50, then for him it will not be a dream trip, but just a way to spend a weekend. And such a tourist will definitely not spend money from the heart at the resort, respect local traditions, follow unwritten rules. They comply with official laws only under penalty of penalty!
Among the problems that traditional tourist centers put on the brink of destruction, frantic traffic is dominant. In Thailand, they simply closed the beach from a movie of the same name with Leonardo DiCaprio to give the ecosystem a chance to recover. The Philippine island of Boracay was also closed for a big cleaning, the legendary “Red Quarter” of Amsterdam, Barcelona closes and it threatens to close the port for tourist liners. Let the tourists come, albeit little by little, and not by whole hordes!
In second place is the issue of renting real estate, where modern online services entered into an unspoken war with hoteliers and the local population. For example, in Paris, 60 thousand apartments have virtually disappeared from the market because they are only rented through Airbnb. In Amsterdam there are 19.6 thousand of them, in Barcelona – 18.3 thousand, in Venice – 8.5 thousand, and this is only according to official data. On the one hand, guests save money, while locals directly earn money, but on the other hand, the typical Crimean Syndrome is observed. There is supply and demand, but regulation – zero.
