Tourists took a dip in the Galician Chernobyl and suddenly got poisoned

What do the old pond near Novosibirsk and the lake in Spanish Galicia have in common? They are unbelievably beautiful and extremely toxic, and even here this summer attracts tourists …

A significant fact – in contrast to the Europeans, the Russians do not crawl into the turquoise waters of their pond, beware. But in the “Galician Chernobyl”, as the locals called this very bad place, instagrammers poison each other almost every week. And consider it right!

The Galicia region, in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, came into the attention of the authorities and the media between the First and Second World Wars. In Spain, then the Nazis and Franco came to power, whom the “sculpted friend” Adolf Hitler, urged to shut up the village activists and begin industrial mining of tungsten. At the then level of technological development, this put an end to the cultivation of the land – too many hazardous chemicals were spent on the processing of ore extracted from mines. Nobody thought about ecology, the war was just around the corner, and after the war the mines worked for another 30 years, before closing in the 80s.

Chemical rubbish has accumulated in several caves under Mount Nemo and flows out in a place known as “Monte Nemo Lake”. It received such a poetic name because of the unbelievably beautiful shades of water, which, strictly speaking, cannot exist in nature. And this is not a metaphor for speech, just such a concentration of certain chemical elements, except as a result of human activity, is impossible to obtain. And therefore, people who know, with bitter irony, call the lake “Galician Chernobyl.”

Due to deliberately false advertising and beautiful photos of the lake, foreigners poured into the region
It is logical that no one in their right mind will get into a swim in a deadly but obviously poisonous water. But only where can he, intellect, get from instagram tourists, drawing knowledge of the world and sights from comments under the posts of subscribers? Again, this is not an exaggeration, but a retelling of the essence of the Dameme Galicia tourism campaign of 2017, when foreigners poured into the region due to knowingly false advertising and beautiful photographs of the lake. And I had to hastily put things in order until everyone overdid it. Since then, rumor about the beautiful Monte Nemo Lake has been surfing the Internet, and this summer it is once again heard.

Last week, a series of publications appeared from well-known and not-so-instagrammers who complained about the heinous side effects of bathing in the same lake. “We just plunged and took a few shots, and then for 2 weeks they were teasing, puke and itchy, like damned.” And rightly so – Manuel Ferreiro, a doctor from the University Hospital of A Coruña, describes the effect of the water of Lake Monte Nemo on people like this. “Short-term exposure is likely to cause eye and skin irritation, but longer exposure to water and digestion of toxins can cause stomach problems, vomiting, and diarrhea.”

There were other “lucky ones” who suffered because of the desire to take a selfie on the bank of an insidious lake, but modestly kept silent about the punishment that followed. This was an occasion for regional politicians and representatives of various social organizations to raise again the question of whether it would be better to close access to the lake altogether. And not to treat every year new fools, fascinated by fairy tales from social networks. Paradoxically, it is precisely those who are worried and who they want to protect who are opposed.

“Lucky” suffered because of the desire to take a selfie on the bank of an insidious lake and modestly kept silent about the punishment that followed
As one of the “Instagram stars” stated, nausea for a couple of days is a worthy fee for the opportunity to join such a wonderful place. Yes, we all know and understand, but still we will climb into a toxic environment for the sake of beautiful photographs. And so what to do with such?
