“Throw an eagle on a mobile phone”, or how Siberian ornithologists help

To study the migration of steppe birds, scientists use GPS devices that send text messages …

Until recently, there were no difficulties with this, and this year one of the birds went to Iran. Since sending SMS from there is not a cheap pleasure, the entire budget for the year for research was spent already in October. In order to continue tracking, we initiated the action “Throw the eagle to the mobile phone”.

Scientists have long been studying the movements of the steppe eagles, because they are Red Book. Thanks to GPS devices on every bird of prey, data with their coordinates comes every day. The goal of scientists is to identify the main migration routes in order to prevent threats to birds (power lines, abandoned poisons, people with guns) whenever possible. Knowing the travel routes, the route can be made as safe as possible.

The goal of scientists is to identify the main migration routes
In summer, steppe eagles, as a rule, live in Russia or Kazakhstan, wait for the cold in Saudi Arabia, India, less often go to Iran, Afghanistan.

So it happened now: birds of prey hit the road through Kazakhstan, choosing a route away from mobile towers. Some generally left the budget SMS area. So, the Min’s eagle flew by all the Kazakh towers, hitting Iran, from where 1 sms is sent for 49 rubles. And as soon as communication with her was restored, her GPS began to transmit data for the entire flight. Costs amounted to 7,000 rubles. per day. You cannot change the settings, they are in the device’s memory.

That is, the money allocated for communication services for the year ended a little more than after 9 months. The coordinates of the movement come to scientists hourly in the afternoon. It is unreasonable to send data less often: if a disaster happens to a bird, ornithologists learn about this too late. At the same time, “subscribers” run the risk of getting into the unit, which will lead to the loss of all information, and they still have to fly before the end of the year.

This action was initiated in order to fill the shortage of funds that were spent prematurely. By the end of October (data as of October 25, 2019) almost 100 thousand rubles were collected. Soon, the Megafon company said that the debt was paid off and even promised to create a special tariff for such cases.
Costly wintering
Some birds “act” competently, scientists say. For example, Aina, before flying to Egypt, flew to Russia, from where a million SMS went with her movements in Kazakhstan in the summer for 2 rubles. From here the eagle headed for the winter (she is now in Sudan). Two other predators went to Pakistan (from there messages are sent 2 times cheaper).

In total, 13 bird routes are tracked. In addition to Mines, the coordinates of 3 other eagles also hit the budget. Two last winter spent the winter in an expensive area, and now, apparently, they plan to repeat everything. One was in Iran, from where he transferred part of his summer movements.
