Caution! Sharks in the Seychelles

More than 200 thousand tourists visit Seychelles annually. There are among the visitors and the Russians. People come here to relax on the shores of the warm sea, not even suspecting that any paradise can be dangerous.

Nearly America and Australia, 50 shark attacks on holidaymakers are recorded each year. Since 1963, no such incidents have been observed in the Seychelles. A coral reef stretches almost everywhere along the coastline of the islands, thanks to which predators usually did not swim close to the coast. But everything changed in the late summer of 2011. Then 2 attacks were immediately recorded in the area of the island of Praslin.

August 1 at 15.30 the shark bit the Frenchman Nicolas Virol. After meeting with her, the 36-year-old diver died from blood loss – both legs were damaged in him.

On August 16, at 4.30 p.m., a predator attacked British tourist Ian Redmond when he was diving with a mask near a coral reef. The man came to the resort for 2 weeks to spend a honeymoon here with his wife. As a result of the attack, he lost his left hand. He also had deep wounds to the abdomen and legs. Despite the medical assistance provided, he also died.

In both cases, the predator attacked at a distance of about 20 m from the coast. To prevent new incidents, the beach was closed at that time, like others that were not protected by a reef. Along the way, pulled the net to protect vacationers from uninvited guests. Rescue duty officers appeared on the beaches.

Caution! Sharks in the Seychelles
Authorities conducted an investigation, which involved specialists from South Africa. We found out that the attacking shark was about 2 m long. The exact causes of the incidents are not called, but there are several opinions. They say that at that time the water temperature in that part of the ocean dropped slightly, and the fish changed the migration route, leaving the predator without food. According to another point of view, fishing is to blame. The resort has a tuna fishing center, and this entails environmental consequences.

After those cases, the Seychelles is calm.

Sharks are the largest fish in the oceans. Being very strong, for the most part they are not aggressive. In total there are more than 500 species, and 4 of them are considered dangerous to humans. It is worth noting that these marine inhabitants love fatty meat, for example, seals, sea turtles, and they also eat fish. They often attack a person if they confuse him with their prey, less often – to try an unfamiliar creature on the tooth. It also happens that people provoke an attack, trying to touch a shark.

Doing this is strictly forbidden, because an attack can be fatal. Moreover, the jaws of the fish are arranged in such a way that it can easily gnaw pieces of flesh.

To avoid danger, it is not recommended:

swim with bleeding wounds and scratches;

diving with a lantern – the light attracts sharks;

to lie on the surface of the water for a long time;

make sharp movements near the shark.

Finally, swim in the morning or in the evening (this is the time of feeding predators), as well as in troubled waters.
