Bali regions for beach holidays and surfing

The Indonesian island of Bali has long earned the fame of “the last paradise on earth”, where, as befits such a status, there is everything in abundance …

Together with VITO RUSSIA, the expert traveled the whole island, got acquainted with different images of Bali, compiled TOP locations for you, and also prepared useful tips. This article is about beaches and surfing.

Bali, locals consider the “island of the gods.” According to legend, the higher powers were so bewitched by the local beauties that they decided to rule the world with Bali.

Despite the fact that Bali is part of Indonesia, it is a very special island, an enclave of “Indo-Buddhism” in the country, with its own way of life, its own philosophy and rules. You can feel it from the first minutes of a trip around the island – which is worth at least tens of thousands of temples scattered throughout.
“Paradise beaches” in the style of “Bounty” rather search on the islands of Gili, in Sanur and Padangbai
Contrary to popular belief, Bali is a classic beach destination. Once on this island, you will quickly realize how great the difference is between real Bali and Instagram. Heroes of the latter love to exhibit gorgeous pictures of beaches under the mandatory hashtag # Fairytale Bali.

But in reality, there are not so many “bathing” beaches here. Yes, we do not detract from the beach advantages of Bali, we just advise you not to have any illusions regarding the huge number of beaches in the paradise format. Everywhere has its own nuances: somewhere there are big waves, in places where there are no waves – often the beach itself is “average”, ideal both the beach and the sea – it means it can be crowded, etc.

And yet, the vast majority of Russians go to Bali for the beaches. Let’s look at the beach areas of Bali more closely and objectively.

For convenience, consider the popular areas in the south and south-west of the island – Kuta, Seminyak, Cangu, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Bukit Peninsula.

The closest to the Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport is the Kuta region, it is ranked as a budget resort in Bali. Kuta is like a patchwork quilt: temples with deities dressed in yellow, red, white and black clothes, a motley colorful audience, many bars and shops, eternal traffic jams.

Indonesia. Bali Kuta
If you want to enjoy a beach holiday, then Kuta is most likely not suitable for you. The beaches here are dirty, and not to say that the picturesque. Private beaches are, of course, cleaner, but still far from ideal.

If you rent a room in a guest house and want to access a private beach, remember that they are paid. However, if you don’t go to the beach through the hotel lobby, but simply come to it from the shoreline (there are no fences), you won’t have to pay, the only thing you will have to rest without is a sunbed.

But Kuta is a beach story. Basically, novice surfers stop here. There are many surf schools in the area (there are surf camps with Russian-speaking guides), so you can safely hire an instructor and learn this sport, and visit bars in the evenings. But snorkeling or diving is best done on the eastern shores of the island, in the Amed area, there are the main diving centers in Bali.

Among other things, Kuta is also a lot of excellent massage parlors. In fact, the SPA industry on the island is very developed. There are more massage parlors than eateries. Naturally, the level is different – from 200 rubles per massage to 3-5 thousand rubles. Moreover, the price does not depend on the quality of the service, but on comfort.

The minimum prices are offered by street salons, but if you want to get a massage in a relaxing environment with soft background music, special aroma oils, tea drinking at the end of the session, then you will have to pay about 2 thousand rubles.

Why, speaking of SPA, do we focus on Kut? Because after a long flight from Russia, massage is the first thing you want to get from Bali.

Before moving on to other regions, we will give you advice. Upon arrival in Bali, immediately buy a local SIM card, it is possible at the airport. It will be very convenient for you, for example, to call a bike taxi through the GoJek application. In addition to budget travel around the island, through the application you can order food and even a governess.

For those who want to rent a bike (there is no public transport in Bali). Remember that to drive a bike you need rights – either international A category rights or Asian (obtained in Bali or, for example, in Thailand).

Without rights, their presence is checked mainly between Kuta and Canggu – but this is risky. If you are stopped without rights, you will have to pay a fine of more than 200 thousand rupees (about 1 thousand rubles).

The beaches of Kuta are rather weak in order to spend a relaxing holiday there, especially with children. Those beaches that are closer to the airport are not very well-groomed, the picture is better in the central part of the resort, but there are also disadvantages in the form of big waves.

In the resort of Nusa Dua, the coast is protected by a breakwater in the form of a coral reef. The beaches themselves are clean and beautiful, the level of beach infrastructure is higher than on Kut – but also the prices too.
